LEADS from LLAMA

(CHICAGO) – The American Library Association (ALA) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announce the opening of the 2008 competition for the ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Award. This biennial competition honors excellence in library interior design, and promotes examples of extraordinary design reflected through innovative concepts. Award winners will demonstrate excellence in aesthetics, design creativity, function, and satisfaction of the client’s objectives. The Buildings and Equipment Section (BES) of the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), a division of ALA, administers the program in partnership with the IIDA.

The competition is open to any library interior design project completed after October 1, 2005 and no later than October 1, 2007. Categories for entries are: Public Libraries, 30,000 sft. and smaller; Public Libraries, over 30,000 sft.; Academic Libraries, 30,000 sft. and smaller; Academic Libraries, over 30,000 sft.; Special Libraries, 30,000 sft. and smaller; Special Libraries, over 30,000 sft.; Outstanding Historic Renovation Project; Innovation in Sustainable Design; Single Space—a small project that focuses on a specific room or area in a library; and “On the Boards”—recognizing a project currently in design phase and not under construction.

Previous publication is acceptable. The project must be submitted by a licensed design professional; multiple entries are permitted. Entries must be received by Monday, March 31, 2008, 5:00 pm central time.

A panel of two licensed interior design professionals and two librarians will judge the entries and make awards in all categories that have deserving submissions. Winners will be announced in April, and the awards will be given at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA on June 30, 2008. Winning projects will be published in the Contract Magazine, American Libraries, Library Administration and Management, and other publications.
