LLAMA Webinar Offers Keys to Coaching and Supervising Employees

Library supervisors, managers, and team leaders will usually agree on one thing: library school did not adequately prepare them for these roles. Coaching, managing, leading, and especially disciplining library employees often require a new set of skills. The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) will present “You Can Do It — Coaching and Supervising Library Employees,” on Wed., September 27, at 1:30 – 3:00 pm (Central time). This webinar will give you a fresh perspective on people management whether you’re a new supervisor, want to understand how coaching and discipline work, or are facing a tricky situation with an employee.

Learn how your current coaching skills can help people learn new skills or address poor performance. Find out how progressive discipline works as an escalating range of responses to employee performance problems, and how it can be successful in both union and non-union workplaces. Also learn how to approach potentially unpleasant conversations, insubordination, bullying, and other workplace difficulties. It’s hard—but you can do it!

This webinar addresses several of LLAMA’s 14 Foundational Leadership Competencies including communication skills, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and evidence-based decision making.

By the end of this webinar, participants will understand:

– How most of us learn supervisory and coaching/disciplinary skills
– Legal issues and local factors
– What to do when a problem behavior arises
– Approaches and best practices for employee coaching
– Approaches to discipline: progressive discipline, documentation, written and oral discipline, investigations, and serving discipline
– The people factor: employee engagement and relations, ongoing vs. acute problems
