Members of professions have a responsibility to contribute to the literature of the profession, but many librarians need guidance in organizing their ideas and their time. Neal, Vice President and University Librarian, Columbia University; Blaise Cronin, Dean, Indiana University School of Library & Information Science; Gregg Sapp, Science Librarian, University of Albany; Editor, Journal of Access Services; Howard Wainer, author and Distinguished Research Scientist, National Board of Medical Examiners; and Barbara Dewey, Dean, University of Tennessee Libraries. WHAT THEY DIDN’T TEACH YOU IN LIBRARY SCHOOL
Mark your calendar for an exciting and timely program at ALA Annual Meeting in Toronto: “What They Didn’t Teach You in Library School: How to Be Politically Savvy,†Sunday, June 22 – 10:30 – noon. Co-sponsored by the LAMA – PRMS – Education & Training Committee and the LAMA-PRMS Governmental Advocacy Skills Committee.
Today, libraries of all types face fierce competition for resources. This is particularly true as some officials have expressed their doubt of the necessity of libraries because they believe that everything is on the Internet and all of that is free. Additionally, libraries are increasingly affected by legislation that potentially limits access to information (e.g., UCITA and CIPA.) Librarians must be ready, willing, and able to enter the arena of politics if their libraries are to remain viable. This political arena ranges from local administration and trustee boards to city, state, and national governments. The goal of this program is to encourage librarians to become politically involved and to give tips on how to be politically savvy in a variety of contexts. Some of the specific topics to be covered are how to evaluate the political structure and galvanize support, how to positively capture the attention of those in power, how to work with the media, and how to measure success. Speakers: Jim Neal, Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian. Columbia University; Anne M. Turner, Director of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries; Ken Haycock, Professor at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of British Columbia
–Vanaja Menon, Assistant Director of Libraries, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

NEW ALA WEBSITE DEBUTS APRIL 7
The American Library Association is pleased to announce its new Web design will debut April 7. ALA members and staff have spent the last year conceptualizing the new Web site and developing a new content management system.
The new site will feature a better search engine, one-stop pages detailing ALA’s work in major areas of interest, a more modern look and feel and more content to help library professionals in their daily work. The home page also will feature new navigation headings: Libraries & You; Education & Careers; Awards & Scholarships; Our Association; Issues & Advocacy; Professional Tools; News; Events & Conferences; and Products & Publications. The ALA previewed the site during its 2003 Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia. For a sneak peak at the site now, please go to: http://www.ala.org/newsite/.
The LAMA web site is also being converted to the new content management system. It’s expected that there will be a period of adjustment and debugging before the Web sites become truly serviceable. Users who want more information or assistance with the ALA Web should call ALA Customer Service at 800-545-2433 and press 5, or email helpdesk@ala.org. Those with comments, questions and suggestions specifically about the LAMA site may contact Arawa McClendon amcclendon@ala.org.
