LEADS from LLAMA

The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) will present two institutes at the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association (ALA) on Fri., Jan. 15, 2010 in Boston.

Julie Todaro, an educator, trainer and consultant with more than 30 years of experience in library and information environments will present “Supervisory Training.” This program will focus on topics critical to the success of current and aspiring library leaders and managers, including: Supervision without micromanagement; Positive reinforcement and workplace coaching; and Evaluation, discipline and termination. Participants will have the option to continue their learning through an online communication forum and special online courses designed to share the lessons learned, and their application to real-life situations.

Bill Sannwald, faculty member of the Graduate School of Business at San Diego State University and a former director of the San Diego Public Library, will present “The Complex Edifice.” This one-day workshop will provide the tools needed to evaluate a library’s existing capital facilities and determine what improvements may be needed. Case studies from recent library projects will illustrate new construction and alternatives including remodeling, renovation and expansion. Learning objectives include: building a team to determine library needs and serve as advocates for the project; selecting architects and engineers; understanding technology needs and building requirements; and managing post-occupancy evaluation.
