LAMA ANNOUNCES “LEADERS OF THE PACK†PARTICIPANTS
LAMA has selected ten dynamic men and women who aspire to be future leaders of the library profession to participate in LAMA’s “Leaders of the Pack†mentor project. This three-year mentoring project gives each participant an opportunity to develop his/her skills and professional networks; while contributing to LAMA’s commitment to outstanding programs, life-long learning and leadership development for library administrators and managers. Each participant will be paired with a mentor, and will be appointed to a LAMA committee. Protégés will also receive a one-year LAMA membership, a travel stipend for attending the American Library Association (ALA) 2004 Midwinter Meeting in San Diego, Calif. and Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla., and a host of other benefits.
“I am confident that the Leaders of the Pack program will provide meaningful learning opportunities and contribute to the development of new leadership for our profession and our Association,†says LAMA president Paul Anderson. “LAMA’s members look forward to welcoming and working with the protégés and their mentors.â€

Kennedy Public Library, Hialeah, Fla.; Tracy Koch Englert, catalog librarian, University of Southern Mississippi Library, Hattiesburg, Miss.; Timothy H. Gatti, head, cataloging services department, University Libraries, SUNY Albany, N.Y.; Brian C. Gray, library associate senior, Science and Technology Library, University of Akron, Ohio; Jennifer O. Keohane, business outreach librarian, Simsbury Public Library, Conn.; Anna K. Lewis, access services librarian, Center for Instructional Materials & Computing, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wis.; Dorothy A. Morgan, business manager/administrative assistant, Liverpool Public Library, N.Y.; Vicki L. Nesting, regional branch librarian, East Regional, St. Charles Parish Library, Destrehan, La.; Amelia J. Shelley, youth and outreach services division manager, Laramie County Library Central Branch, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Michelle R. Turvey, cataloging librarian and assistant professor of library science, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo.
The “Leaders of the Pack†project is supported by The World Book–ALA Goal Grant, an annual grant of $10,000 that supports specific projects that advance the mission, priority areas, and goals of the ALA, and is donated by World Book, Inc.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY GRANT APPLICATIONS
LAMA is now accepting applications for its Cultural Diversity Grant. The award is available to LAMA members or LAMA units in support of the grant proposal goals. Members of the LAMA Cultural Diversity Committee are ineligible. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by December 1, 2003. The goal of the LAMA Cultural Diversity Grant is to support: the creation and dissemination of resources that will assist library administrators and managers in developing a vision and commitment to diversity; efforts to foster and sustain diversity throughout library institutions; efforts to increase the representation and advancement of people of color in the field of library administration and management, efforts to establish productive partnerships between LAMA and major national organizations representing minority interests; efforts to strengthen the diversity of LAMA membership, committees and officers, and integrate diversity into all aspects o the association’s work.

JOHN COTTON DANA LIBRARY PUBLIC RELATIONS AWARD COMPETITION OPEN FOR 2004
Competition is now open for the 2004 John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award contest, sponsored by the H. W. Wilson Company and LAMA. The deadline for entries is December 12, 2003.
Presented annually since 1946, the award honors outstanding library public relations programs that support a specific project, goal or activity, or a sustained, ongoing program. The contest is open to all libraries and agencies that promote library service. Entries can be for programs conducted in the calendar year 2003 (January-December), school year 2002-2003 (Fall-Spring) or any special project that ends in 2003. Submitted entries are judged and winners announced by the PRMS JCD Awards Committee at the 2004 Midwinter Meeting in San Diego. The awards and cash grants will be presented during the 2004 ALA Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. LAMA SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR DIVISION AWARDS
LAMA seeks nominations for the 2004 Recognition of Group Achievement Award, the Leadership Award, and President’s Award. The deadline for nominations and supporting materials is December 1, 2003. LAMA Recognition of Group Achievement Award recognizes groups or committees that provide outstanding service in support of the division’s goals. LAMA Leadership Award will be awarded to honor an individual LAMA member for outstanding contributions to the goals of the division. The LAMA President’s Award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the goals of LAMA by outside organizations or by individuals who are not LAMA members. All awards consist of a citation to be presented at the LAMA President’s program during the 2004 Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. Nominations should list the activities of the nominee that have contributed in a significant way to the realization of one or more LAMA goals. SASS INVITES NOMINATIONS FOR 2004 OFFICER SLATE
The SASS Nominating Committee invites nominations or self-nominations for the 2004 ballot for the offices of Chair-Elect, Secretary and Member-at-Large. We welcome nominations or self-nominations from our colleagues in public and special libraries. Candidates who can be considered for the SASS slate must be:
a) Personal members of ALA, LAMA and SASS not only at the time of their election but also during their term of office;
b) Cannot run at the same time for office in any other section of the division or in any other division;
c) If they are currently officers in another division or in another section of the division, may accept nomination only if their term expires before the new term would begin.
d) Candidates selected for the slate must submit a biographical information form and succinct statement of concern of no more than 150 words.

GORMAN, STRIPLING SEEK ALA PRESIDENCY; SWITZER AND LINKE SEEK TREASURER OFFICE
The American Library Association Executive Board approved the Nominating Committee’s selections for ALA presidential candidates at its fall meeting in Chicago October 11. Seeking the 2005–2006 ALA presidency are Michael Gorman, dean of library services at the Henry Madden Library, California State University at Fresno; and Barbara Stripling, director of library programs at New Visions for Public Schools in New York City. Both are currently members of the executive board.
The board also approved two candidates for the 2004–2007 term as ALA treasurer: Teri Switzer, assistant director for human resources and budget at the Auraria Library, University of Colorado at Denver; and Erika C. Linke, associate dean of university libraries for collection and user services at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Switzer is currently serving a one-year term as treasurer. She is a LAMA member and past-chair of the Human Resources Section. Linke is also a member of LAMA.
The board also selected a roster of 74 candidates for the Association’s governing Council who will be listed in the December issue of American Libraries. Electronic ballot information will be transmitted to all ALA members with valid e-mail addresses in March 2004. ALA members without valid e-mail addresses on file will receive materials by mail. Those who prefer to vote by paper ballot may contact the Member and Customer Services department at 800-545-2433 and press 5, or e-mail membership@ala.org. An FAQ about ALA elections and electronic balloting is attached to this newsletter.
