LAMA WINS ALA/WORLD BOOK GOAL AWARD
The World Book/ALA Goal Award Jury grants the 2003 award, in the full amount of $10,000, to LAMA’s project, entitled “Leaders of the Pack: Bringing up the Next Generation of Library Leaders through LAMA.†The Jury believes that LAMA proposal [developed by Rod MacNeil and Cathy Miesse and endorsed by the LAMA Executive Committee at its spring meeting] is the most thoughtful, tightly aligns to ALA goals and objectives, involves a broad constituency, is designed to produce tangible results and is outcomes based. It has the potential to have a significant contribution to the field both in its leadership development but also as a model for other ALA divisions. We are gratified by the way that LAMA plans to integrate the program into ALA’s professional meetings and the clear commitment of the association, on many levels, to this project.
–Jian Liu, Chair, World Book/ALA Goal Award Jury
The World Book-ALA Goal Grant is an annual grant of up to $10,000 to a ALA Division, Round Table, Office or Chapter which affiliates with the ALA Chapter Relations Office. The grant will support specific projects which advance the mission, priority areas, and goals of ALA. For more information, click on “Grants and Awards at www.ala.org

LIBRARY SUPPORT STAFF TRAINING HONOR ROLL
Training and development of all library workers are two of the most important needs in today’s library and are critical in meeting the library’s mission and goals. As budgets become tight and salary concerns are in the forefront, support to attend workshops and
conferences become increasingly more important library workers. The Money Talks APA discussion list has implemented a program to acknowledge libraries that provide support to its employees to attend work-related workshops, conferences, and classes/course work. We invite all library directors to visit http://www.mjfreedman.org/honorrollsite/index.html and submit the electronic application form so your library can become a recognized champion of professional development for library workers. Select as many options as apply and provide any appropriate explanations in the Comments box at the end of the application form.

ALA JOINS INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY COMMUNITY IN ASSISTING IRAQ NATIONAL LIBRARY
ALA announced on April 24 that it has begun working with other members of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force – which includes the Library of Congress, the Institute for Museum and Library Services and various cultural organizations – to coordinate with efforts of the IFLA and UNESCO to respond to requests for assistance from colleagues in Iraq to help restore the National Library and Archive, Iraq’s principal Islamic library, and other important centers of learning in the cradle of civilization.
“The American Library Association grieves for and deplores the catastrophic losses to Iraq’s cultural heritage that have already occurred with the destruction of the National Library Archives and the Islamic library. Cultural heritage is as important as oil. Libraries are a cornerstone of democracy and are vital resources in the re-establishment of a civil society. We urge the administration to ensure that in the future the necessary resources will be made available to prevent further catastrophes,†said ALA President Maurice J. (Mitch) Freedman. “ALA stands ready to work with our sister cultural organizations in Iraq, appropriate agencies, and the Iraqi people and urges the U.S. government to help rebuild and restore these and other libraries and cultural institutions in Iraq that have been looted and destroyed – thus helping to return to the Iraqi people an important part of their cultural heritage and legacy,†he concluded.
The National Library and Archives of Iraq and the principal Islamic library were destroyed in April by looters and arsonists. Reports indicated that the libraries were unguarded at the time of their destruction. Reports also indicate that very little, if any, of the collections survived. The printed books, manuscripts and archival records held in these institutions documented the historical and cultural history of the country. It is clear that a large proportion of these historical documents were unique and may never be able to be replaced or duplicated in any form. The National Library and Archives housed all the books published in Iraq. It preserved rare old books on Baghdad and the region, important books on Arabic linguistics, and antique handwritten manuscripts from the Ottoman and Abbasid periods. The Islamic library was home to some of the world’s most priceless early Qurans and other scholarly material pertaining to the Islamic faith.
