A WORD FROM THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Greetings from the LAMA office! I’d like tell you a little about myself, since I am new to the Association. Before arriving at ALA in on September 17, I had worked for 19 years in academic libraries; most recently heading the preservation department at Northwestern University Library. I’ve been very active in ALCTS during that time, serving as chair of the Preservation of Library Materials (now Preservation and Reformatting) Section and a member of the ALCTS Board of Directors. During the past few weeks I have been coming up to speed, with invaluable assistance from President Joan Giesecke and the Executive Committee, LAMA Program Assistant Doll Thorn-Hawkins, and former Executive Director Charles Wilt and the ALCTS staff.
We hope to have the LAMA office fully staffed in the next few weeks, and we welcome your comments, suggestions and contributions for this newsletter and any other aspects of the Association’s activities and programs. I look forward to meeting many of you at Midwinter, and to working with you to promote the benefits of LAMA membership and programs to our colleagues.

AMERICAN LIBRARIES: NO DANGER FROM PRINTING POWDER
Leonard Kniffel, editor of American Libraries, has issued a memo assuring readers that there is no reason for alarm should they find residue of a white, powdery substance in the November issue polybagged with the American Library Association (ALA) Handbook of Organization. The powder is a nonhazardous agent, similar to talcum powder, that is used to dry ink and reduce static electricity. In light of current concerns, the ALA’s printing company, Brown Printing Company, is reducing or eliminating the use of materials in the manufacturing process that may leave some residue. The handbook, however, was printed in October, and some residue has been found in some of the bagged mailings.
The Centers for Disease Control has issued the following statement on the issue: “We are aware of concerns that have been expressed by the general public about Anthrax being transmitted through paper and ink. The public is at no risk of disease from handling printed paper.”
The full statement from the Brown Printing Company to customers can be read at: http://www.ala.org/news/v7n14/memo.html.
American Libraries is the magazine of the ALA and circulates to about 63,000 members and more than 3,000 institutional subscribers.

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA PRESENTS REGIONAL INSTITUTE
The University of Nebraska Council of Libraries Staff Development Committee is sponsoring the “Organizational Culture: Transforming Your Library For Success” Regional Institute in Lincoln on November 14. The institute, presented by Abigail Hubbard, addresses a library’s culture – its underlying assumptions, beliefs, values, norms and expectations – and its profound effect on both individual behavior and organizational effectiveness. Attendees learn how to assess their institution’s current culture, evaluate its effectiveness, understand when and how to change the culture, and communicate the library’s values, mission and goals to the outside community. Contact Greg Anderson (andersong@unkledu) for information about this institute. For a complete listing of these stimulating and information workshops, and for information on scheduling an institute, contact Doll Thorn-Hawkins (dthorn@ala.org, 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5032).

LAMA PRESENTS “AN EVENING OF JAZZ” AT 2002 ALA MIDWINTER
LAMA will host “An Evening Of Jazz” on Saturday, January 19, 2002, during the Midwinter Meeting in New Orleans. The program will feature The Port of New Orleans Jazz Band and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB). The performances and dancing begin at 8 p.m. The registration deadline is December 1, 2001.
Specializing in New Orleans style jazz, the repertoire of The Port of New Orleans Jazz Band includes music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The Port of New Orleans Jazz Band was selected as Offbeat Magazine’s 2000 Best Emerging Traditional Jazz Band.
Back in 1917, under the leadership of Mr. Dominic James “Nick” LaRocca, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band recorded the first-ever jazz recording. This recording was a worldwide sensation, selling over 1 million copies that year, outselling the first million seller of that time, Enrico Caruso. The ODJB is back led by Nick’s son, Jimmy LaRocca, on trumpet and vocals. The ODJB has performed in concert and at jazz festivals in Brazil, Japan, Sweden, Finland and the United States.
Event proceeds will benefit the LAMA Endowment Fund, which provides scholarship opportunities for library students to support their pursuit of a master of library science degree. The Endowment Fund also provides professional development grant opportunities for LAMA members to attend LAMA Regional Institutes and for an international exchange between LAMA members and international librarians to support attendance at international library association meetings and ALA Annual Conference.
The location of the event has not yet been determined. The ticket price is $30. To register for the event, complete the ALA Conference Advanced Registration form located in the October issue of American Libraries, or online at https://cs.ala.org/midwinter. Tickets will be available onsite in the conference registration area on a space available basis. For more information contact Doll Thorn-Hawkins at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5032; dthorn@ala.org.

FREEDMAN SEEKS DIVISIONS’ SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENTIAL INITIATIVE
At the ALA Divisional Concurrent Executive Committees Meeting on October 27, President-Elect Mitch Freedman asked the member leaders to consider how their divisions might support his “Campaign for America’s Librarians.” The campaign seeks to: change perceptions of the librarian in society, reform her image, clarify what a librarian does, describe the education and highly specialized skills required to do her job, and emphatically call for improved salaries and pay equity for library workers. Freedman asked the leaders to investigate how this initiative might fit in with divisional goals and efforts, and to appoint a liaison to the campaign.
