HRS Discussion Group Identifies Emerging Trends in Human Resources

The Human Resources Section (HRS) of the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) has established a new discussion group – the Emerging Trends Discussion Group. LLAMA HRS established this new discussion group in support of the division’s strategic plan and the goal to “establish regular environmental monitoring to capture information on trends and issues of importance to members.”

Fifty-eight people attended the group’s first discussion held at the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, California. The petition to officially establish the discussion group was approved at the conference by the LLAMA Board of Directors.

Prior to the 2008 ALA Annual Conference, LLAMA HRS members summarized major trends in human resources as identified by the Society for Human Resources Management and the American Society for Training and Development, two major professional organizations. These trends provided those attending the discussion group with some background information and a starting point. The SHRM and ASTD trends are summarized in the LLAMA HRS Emerging Trends Discussion Group Invitation.

The initial meeting of the discussion group was focused on discussing three questions:

  • What are the major trends you are seeing in all areas of human resources in your library workplace?
  • What best practices are you using to address these trends and changes?
  • What keeps you up at night? What is the one problem you would solve if you could only solve one problem?

The discussion summary provides a complete report of rich and lively discussion among the 58 participants from academic and public libraries and other types of library workplaces.

The HRS Emerging Trends Discussion Group will meet once at ALA Midwinter Meeting and once at ALA Annual Conference. Open to anyone interested, the discussion group’s purpose is to identify and discuss emerging trends in all aspects of human resources in all types of libraries and library workplaces. The discussion group will meet at the 2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver Colorado from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, January 26, in the Colorado Convention Center, Room 708.

Pat Hawthorne and Jenifer Abramson, both of UCLA, are serving as the co-chairs of the discussion group for the first year. The group will be seeking two new co-chairs – one an academic librarian and one a public librarian – for the 2009 – 2010 year (the two new co-chairs would begin their term following the 2009 ALA Annual Conference and would be responsible for scheduling the discussion group meeting, publicizing the meeting, facilitating the discussion, writing a summary of the discussion).
