E-book/Webcast package helps planning library expansion or renovation

Ann Hamilton was involved in academic library building projects for many years, most recently enlarging an academic research library from 100,000 to 200,000 square feet, but she couldn’t find a book that addressed each step of a construction project from the earliest planning stages through post construction details. “The majority of books on the market addressed new construction with little advice on expansion and/or renovation. I would have welcomed help from such a book.” As a result, Hamilton decided to write the book she was looking for herself.  Her new E-book/webcast package, “Library Expansion/Renovation Checklist: Creating Today’s ARC (Automated Retrieval Collection) Takes More Than Forty Days and Forty Nights,” is designed to be useful in planning expansion, and/or renovation projects in all types of libraries.

Published by the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA), Hamilton’s work provides examples from different library settings and eliminates academic references except in specific examples. She provides useful information for all levels of projects from the simplest to the most complex. The webcast included with the book features links to videos of an actual expansion/renovation project.

“Serving as the library project coordinator for a $22.75 million expansion and renovation was a wonderful, exciting learning opportunity. After spending eight years moving from design planning through construction, I wanted to share the practical things I learned with other librarians who might be involved in library expansion and renovation projects.” The book and webcast are designed to help both project coordinators and librarians who are responsible for only specific areas of library construction projects.

A native of Alabama, Hamilton earned a Master of Librarianship and a Diploma for Advanced Study in Librarianship at Emory University. She currently serves as chair of the ALA Chapter Relations Committee. She has been active in LLAMA and ACRL for many years, and from 2001-2012 served as the Georgia Chapter Councilor on ALA Council. Along with her current work as the Associate Dean of Georgia Southern University’s Zach S. Henderson Library, Hamilton serves as a consultant to libraries in the process of planning expansions, renovations, or the installation of automated retrieval systems (ARS).
