NEW SECURITY PROCEDURES AT MIDWINTER AND ANNUAL
As you know, since the 9/11 incident, there have been new security measures in place not only at airports, but in large office buildings, high rises, movie studios, government buildings, sporting events and any large gatherings of people. This includes conventions and convention centers. After consulting with the folks at the Morial Convention Center and our security consultants, Summit Security, we have new security guidelines:
1. A photo ID will be required for registration credential pick-up.
2. Any unattended bags or boxes throughout the convention center or hotel meeting rooms and corridors will be removed by security.
3. Attendees and staff are urged to keep control of their badge at all times. A lost badge could permit unauthorized persons to enter secured areas.
4. Attendees and staff should always be aware of their surroundings. If there is a suspicious person or item, please notify security or show management immediately.
5. We will have a redesigned security schedule taking into consideration the heightened state of security and any new requirements by individual venues. This will include security guards checking badges not only at convention center meetings and events, but also at the meeting hotels.
6. Staff, Attendees and Exhibitors must wear their badge at all times in any ALA function and when they are in the Convention Center. People without a badge in the Convention Center will be escorted to Registration where they will be able to obtain one.
7. Due to security restrictions the Internet Café will not be able to be open 24 hours; only from 6:00am until 10:00pm.
8. ALA Office Hours will be the same as the Internet Café. If there are extenuating circumstances, please contact me as soon as possible.
9. Take off your badge as you leave the convention center or any of the meeting hotels. Don’t wear it on the street.
If you have any questions, please contact Conference Services confs@ala.org.

LIBRARY JOURNAL EDITORS SEEK NOMINATIONS FOR LJ PARAPROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR 2002
To honor libraries’ essential non-MLS workers, Library Journal will honor one library worker with the third annual Paraprofessional of the Year Award in its March 1 issue. The award recognizes the essential role of paraprofessionals, now the largest constituency of library workers, in providing excellent library service and places emphasis on the efforts of the winner to further the role of paraprofessionals in the library profession. The editors see this honor as equal in importance to LJ’s annual Librarian of the Year Award, which debuted in 1989 and recognizes those who hold the MLS. Deadline for nominations is January 2, 2002.
The criteria for candidates for LJ’s Paraprofessional of the Year are:
-Excellence in job performance, including contribution(s) enabling the library to serve its constituents and/or its community (whether town, college/university, school, or corporation) better;
-The encouragement of reading and the use of library resources;
-A commitment to free access to information for all;
-Having made efforts to build support groups, networks, and organizations to promote new career paths, excellence in library work, better pay, improved communication in libraries, and the breaking down of barriers between support staff and the MLS librarians with whom they work.
Nominating letters should name the candidate and describe in 500 words or fewer why the nominee deserves the award. Supporting letters and accompanying material will be considered, but the nominating letter itself will be of prime importance. Nominations may be e-mailed to fialkoff@lj.cahners.com or sent to: Francine Fialkoff, Library Journal,245 W. 17th St. , New York, NY 10011

LAMA OFFICE UPDATE
I am pleased to announce that LAMA will be fully staffed by the New Year. On November 12, Patricia Thornton became the LAMA Administrative Assistant. Pat has had a long and successful career in associations, including several years at ALA. She brings a positive approach and a strong member services attitude to the position. Pat’s responsibilities include responding to member queries, maintaining rosters and assisting with the appointment process, and handling the LAMA Endowment. She may be reached at 1-800-545-2433, ex 5036 or pthornton@ala.org.
On January 2, Arawa McClendon will become the LAMA Communications Officer. Arawa has had several years experience in academic libraries and is currently enrolled in the library school program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She holds an MFA in photography and a BA in English. Arawa will focus on the LAMA Web site, publications, awards, and membership initiatives. Her contact information will be available in January.
The past few weeks have been filled with activity as the staff comes up to speed and begins preparation for Midwinter. Because ALA is taking a cautionary approach this fiscal year, travel has been cut back, and LAMA will be bringing only three staff to the conference-myself, Arawa, and Events Manager Doll Thorn-Hawkins. We will do our best to meet members’ needs and ask for your patience during this meeting.
—Lorraine Olley, Executive Director
