ALA CONFERENCE TO REMAIN IN TORONTO
The ALA Executive Board voted June 6 to continue with plans to hold the ALA Annual Conference in Toronto June 19–25, despite growing numbers of the potential 25,000 attendees who say they will stay home because of the threat of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). With the conference just two weeks away, the board also decided that if either the World Health Organization or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issues an advisory against travel to Toronto the conference will be canceled. For the complete story, go to http://www.ala.org/alonline/.

WHAT THEY DIDN’T TEACH YOU IN LIBRARY SCHOOL
Mark your calendar for an exciting and timely program at ALA Annual Meeting in Toronto.
“What They Didn’t Teach You in Library School: How to Be Politically Savvy†will be presented Sunday, June 22 – 10:30 – noon, in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre 801A. Today, libraries of all types face fierce competition for resources. This is particularly true as some officials have expressed their doubt of the necessity of libraries because they believe that everything is on the Internet and all of that is free. Additionally, libraries are increasingly affected by legislation that potentially limits access to information (e.g., UCITA and CIPA.) Librarians must be ready, willing, and able to enter the arena of politics if their libraries are to remain viable. This political arena ranges from local administration and trustee boards to city, state, and national governments. The goal of this program is to encourage librarians to become politically involved and to give tips on how to be politically savvy in a variety of contexts. Some of the specific topics to be covered are how to evaluate the political structure and galvanize support, how to positively capture the attention of those in power, how to work with the media, and how to measure success. Speakers are: Jim Neal, Columbia University; Anne M. Turner, Santa Cruz Public Libraries; and Ken Haycock, University of British Columbia

NEW VISIONS IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Come learn about cutting edge new libraries designed by three world famous architects: Rem Koolhaas of the Netherlands, Enrique Norten of Mexico and John Patkau of Canada. They, along with library representatives from each Library system, will discuss the innovative processes, partnerships and programs that gave rise to the Seattle Public Library’s new Central Library, Brooklyn Public Library’s newly planned Visual and Performing Arts Library and Winnipeg’s new Centennial Library. Please join us to view these new models, currently in design or construction, designed to offer new services and a wider spectrum of choice in library environments and integrate fresh ideas in novel ways. The program, sponsored by ID Systems, Toronto, is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, 1:30-3:30 pm in the Sheraton Ballroom West.

LAMA BOOTH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The Membership Committee continues to seek ways for all LAMA members to participate in the recruitment, retention and involvement of new members. One of the best ways to begin working in LAMA is at the LAMA Booth. Here LAMA members get to meet colleagues and share information about our division. Volunteers are needed to hand out materials, answer questions, and generally explain to visitors why LAMA should be the division of choice! It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s great help to the division. All LAMA members are invited to volunteer. Booth duty also offers new members and not-yet-involved members a great opportunity to participate in LAMA activities without make a lengthy commitment. Members interested in working at the booth at the Annual Conference in Toronto, can volunteer by sending an e-mail to Cathy Tweedie . Cathy will work with you to find an hour that fits your Toronto schedule. Thanks for volunteering!
–Cathy Miesse, Membership Committee Chair

LAMA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE PROGRAMS
The LAMA Membership Committee is seeking volunteers to help with LAMA programs during the ALA Annual Conference in Toronto. At the programs, LAMA members assist by distributing raffle tickets ahead of time and collecting completed tickets afterward. Often, there are also completed evaluation forms to be collected. This is an excellent opportunity for new LAMA members to begin their involvement before taking on more formal commitments. It’ s an activity that can be accomplished while attending one of the always excellent programs for which LAMA is known. Members interested in attending and participating in this LAMA activity at the Annual Conference in Toronto can volunteer by sending an email to the Membership Committee chair: Cathy Miesse .

LOMS ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSION GROUP
Kathryn Deiss and I would like to provide the following information about the meeting of the LAMA LOMS Organizational Development Discussion Group at ALA in Toronto:
1. THE MEETING is scheduled for 4:30-5:45 p.m., Sunday, June 22, in Room 204 of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
2. AGENDA. Please send agenda suggestions to Kathryn (deiss@chilibsys.org) and me (krussell@ku.edu) before the meeting, if you wish. We expect to handle assorted organizational development topics that bubble up from the group, including a follow-up on the brainstorming we did at Midwinter on the components of organizational development programs in libraries.
3. DINNER AFTER THE MEETING. One tradition of the group is that interested participants go to dinner afterwards. Approximately 12 people took advantage of that option at Midwinter. If you are interested in joining the dinner group, please let me know. I will make a reservation at a restaurant somewhat near to the meeting location.
4. DISCUSSION GROUP LEADERSHIP FOR NEXT YEAR. At our Midwinter meeting, and in an email message following it, Kathryn and I asked for volunteers to chair or co-chair the group for 2003/2004. Pat Hawthorne has volunteered, and her nomination will be put forward for election by the group at the meeting. Pat would be pleased to have a co-chair. If you are interested in co-chairing with Pat, or would like to nominate someone, please let me know. The vice-chair will also be elected at the meeting.
I look forward to your agenda topics, and to seeing you in Toronto!
–Keith Russell, LOMS Organizational Development Discussion Group Co-Chair
