2003 AIA/ALA LIBRARY AWARDS ANNOUNCED
ALA, in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), announced the seven recipients of the 2003 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards. The AIA /ALA awards program, now in its 21st year, was developed to recognize and encourage excellence in the architectural design and planning of libraries. The recipients of the 2003 awards will be formally recognized at a special program on June 23 at the 2003 ALA Annual Conference in Toronto. The 2003 jury was comprised of representatives from the architecture as well as library fields. Jury Chair, Henry Myerberg, FAIA, Mary Werner DeNadai, AIA, and David Milling, AIA, represented the architecture industry. ALA judges, selected by the LAMA BES AIA/ALA Library Building Awards Committee, were Kay Johnson of the King County Library System, Issaquah, WA; Barbara Norland, Montgomery County Libraries, MD; and Rich Rosenthal, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, Charlotte, NC. Speaking on behalf of the Jury, Chair Henry Myerberg, FAIA, said, “Each of the seven buildings selected for an award uses a different method to achieve success. All, however, share some common elements: a strong aesthetic sensibility that is consistently applied; sensitivity to context; and a conviction about the importance of the Library as an institution and a place.”
