LAMA PRESENTS TWO MIDWINTER INSTITUTES
Join those who want to learn on the leading edge by attending LAMA’s Midwinter Institutes. LAMA will offer two institutes in Philadelphia prior to the ALA Midwinter Meeting 2003: “Emergency Preparedness: The Human Factor, the Organization, and Resources in a 911 World” on Thursday, January 23, 8:30am-5:00pm, presented by Julie Todaro, Dean of Library Services, Austin Community College, Austin, TX; and “The Big Picture–Library Planning Using GIS” on Friday, January 24, with Marc Futterman, President/CEO, Civic Technologies, Inc., Dr. Christie Koontz, Director, GeoLib, and moderator George Lupone, Associate Director, Cleveland State University Library. “MIDWINTER IS MURDER!” AT 2003 ALA MIDWINTER

CULTURAL DIVERSITY COMMITTEE SEEKS GRANT APPLICATIONS
The Cultural Diversity Committee is now accepting applications for its Cultural Diversity Grant. The application deadline is December 2, 2002. The goals of this program are to support the creation and dissemination of resources that will assist library administrators and managers in developing a vision and commitment to diversity, and in fostering and sustaining diversity throughout their institutions; to increase the representation and advancement of people of color in the field of library administration and management and to establish productive partnerships between LAMA and major national organizations representing minority interests; to strengthen the diversity of LAMA membership, committees, and officers and integrate diversity into all aspects of the association’s work. LAMA DIVISION AWARDS COMMITTEE SEEKS NOMINATIONS
The LAMA Recognition of Achievement Committee encourages individual members, committee chairs, and Sections to nominate colleagues, groups or committees, and external organizations for three annual awards:
>LEADERSHIP AWARD recognizes an individual LAMA member for outstanding leadership and contributions to the Division’s goals [replaces the ‘Certificate of Achievement’ Award].
>GROUP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD honors groups, task forces, or committees that provide outstanding service in support of the Division’s goals.
>PRESIDENT’S AWARD recognizes extraordinary contributions to LAMA’s goals by outside organizations or individuals who are NOT LAMA members.
The Recognition of Achievement Committee is developing ways to enhance visibility and recognition for LAMA award recipients. Contact Recognition of Achievement Committee Chair, Judith Adams-Volpe (adamsj@buffalo.edu) for assistance with the nomination process. The nomination must address the ways in which the nominee’s activities support the LAMA Strategic Plan (http://www.ala.org/lama/governance/index.html). The deadline for nominations is DECEMBER 2, 2002. LAMA/YBP STUDENT WRITING&DEVELOPMENT AWARD SEEKS ENTRANTS
Students enrolled in ALA-accredited library and information studies programs are invited to submit articles in the Student Writing and Development Award competition sponsored by the LAMA and YBP, Inc. The award is given to honor the best article submitted on a topic in the area of library administration and management. The topic for the 2003 competition is “Moving Up, Reaching Out.” The winning article will be published in the fall 2003 issue of Library Administration & Management. The award recipient also will receive a travel grant of up to $1,000, funded by YBP, Inc., to be used to attend the 2003 ALA Annual Conference in Toronto. The deadline for entries is March 1, 2003. Applications for presenting poster sessions at the 2003 ALA/CLA Annual Conference in Toronto are being accepted until January 17, 2003.
