Stepping Into the Director Role: Preparing for the Part (a LLAMA Preconference)

As Director positions open up, is the next generation of leaders ready to assume those positions and transform the libraries in their community? Have you wondered how to reach that new level in your career or what it takes to become an effective new library director? In this full-day preconference, new library directors will detail how to develop the skills you’ll need to succeed, how to respond to the challenges you’ll likely face in your first few years, and how you can leverage your career and ALA experiences to assume a leadership role.

The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) encourages you to join your fellow aspiring library directors for this timely and important preconference brought to you by the LLAMA New Professionals Section and the Library Organization and Management Section. If you’re interested in administration, this session will provide you with an introduction to what the job entails and introduce you to the skills you’ll need to prepare yourself. Hear from new public library directors about the basics, the challenges and the unexpected in their first few years on the job. Learn how they used career opportunities, ALA experience, and other guideposts to enter administration successfully.

We are in a time of transition for library leadership—many positions opening up and many of them being offered to young professionals new to directorships and/or management. At the end of this preconference, participants will: understand what skills and experience will help you be a good director; have a list of resources to use to increase their skills in various areas; and understand the unexpected challenges facing a new director

Sarah Houghton, Director of the San Rafael (Calif.) Public Library, speaks on administration, boards and commissions, human resources and personnel, and politics. Gretchen Caserotti, director of the Meridian Library District (Ida.), speaks on budgets, facilities, change management, and advocacy
