Application process now open for 2014 ALA Leadership Institute

The application process for the 2014 “Leading to the Future” ALA Leadership Institute (August 10-14, Eaglewood Resort, Illinois) is now open, with applications accepted through April 25, 2014. Building on the success of the 2013 inaugural ALA Leadership Institute, and with support from Innovative Interfaces, the four-day immersive leadership development program for 40 mid-career librarians will be led again by ALA Past-President Maureen Sullivan and ACRL Content Strategist Kathryn Deiss.

The institute helps future library leaders develop and practice their leadership skills in areas critical to the future of the libraries they lead. Through reflective and active learning, it offers participants an opportunity to delve into leadership practices, concepts, and frameworks, and to shape their own sustainable leadership vision and ethos, at the same time as building a learning community and network. With content based on real-world cases and nuanced situations, participants explore topics related to the greatest challenges and possibilities of leading into a future marked by turbulence and ambiguity.

Participants in the 2013 inaugural institute highlighted the wide range of benefits they felt the institute offered, describing it as a “life-changing time,” and that it felt like a think tank of 40 “energetic, talented, and visionary” librarians from all types of libraries, offering much learning from fellow participants. You can read what 2013 participants had to say on the Transforming Libraries website.

The application form as well as details and guidelines are at http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/ala-leadership-institute. Applicants may nominate themselves or be nominated by their employer.

Participation includes a free one-year membership in LLAMA (Library Leadership and Management Association). LLAMA President, Catherine Friedman, said “To lead effectively in today’s, and tomorrow’s, libraries, library leaders must take the time to develop and strengthen their leadership abilities, and to discover new and inventive ways of looking at things.”

Support for the Institute is provided by Innovative Interfaces, Inc. Innovative is dedicated to providing leading technology solutions and services that empower libraries and enrich their users worldwide.
