MIDWINTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE DECEMBER 1
The deadline for advance registration for LAMA Midwinter Institutes and the ALA Midwinter Meeting is December 1. Don’t miss out on registration discounts for the Institutes and Meeting. IMPORTANT LAMA MEMBERSHIP DUES INFORMATION
As you may recall, the LAMA membership voted in Spring 2003 to revise the division dues structure. Effective September 1, 2003, LAMA dues are:
$35 One-year introductory new member rate
$50 Personal members
$65 Corporate/organizational members
$15 ALA student members
LAMA members may join sections at no additional charge.
It’s recently come to our attention that ALA neglected to update the dues schedule in the membership renewal package and on the Web site in time, although renewal notices went out with the correct dues amount on the invoice. ALA is working to get the correct information out to the membership now, regrets any inconvenience arising from the misinformation.
Also, please consider renewing your membership by check rather than a credit card. Credit card companies assess ALA and LAMA a service fee of about 3% (approximately $4.50) for every membership renewal charged to a credit card. By writing a check and mailing it in, you will help LAMA and ALA reduce expenses and increase resources available for other activities.

LAMA COMMITTEE ROSTERS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEB
The current rosters for LAMA division and section committees, discussion groups and task forces are now available on the LAMA website. To access them, to go www.ala.org/lama, click on LAMA Community, select Committees and Sections, and then choose a group.
The rosters are the first elements of the LAMA web site designated “members only.” LAMA is one of several divisions to have protected our committee members’ privacy by placing rosters in a password-protected area. The rosters are accessible to any ALA member who has an ALA login ID and password (to create a login click on Login in the upper right corner of the LAMA web page).
The rosters are generated dynamically from information stored in the ALA membership database, so they are always up to date. Creating and installing the interface took several weeks, and we appreciate your patience during this process. We hope that you find this new feature useful. Please email lama@ala.org with your comments and concerns.

INVITATION TO LAMA COO MEETING AT MIDWINTER
The LAMA Executive Committee has asked LAMA Committee on Organization (COO) to look at the structure of LAMA to explore ways that we can make the organization more flexible, less bureaucratic, and more effective. To begin discussions on our structure, at the LAMA COO Midwinter Meeting on Monday, January 13, at 2 p.m., we will be exploring changes we might make in our division wide committees. Do we need as many committees as we have? Should we convert some committees to Interest Groups? (Interest groups can sponsor programs.) Should some of our discussion groups be interest groups? Should division wide committees concentrate on areas that impact LAMA resources (e.g., Budget & Finance, Publications, Membership) and leave other topics to Interest Groups or Discussion Groups? I encourage you to join us Monday afternoon for an open discussion of these issues as we look at LAMA’s structure.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments.

NMRT PRESIDENT’S PROGRAM SEEKS SPEAKERS
At the American Library Association in June 2004, the New Member’s Round Table President’s Program Committee is sponsoring a presentation tentatively titled “Follow the Leader: Forging Leadership Roles as a New Librarian.” The committee needs librarians who are in positions of leadership–for example, library directors or department heads–and who have been in those positions for a relatively short period of time (ideally about five years, preferably no more than ten).
The idea behind this year’s presentation is to find speakers who can talk to upcoming and freshly-minted librarians and paraprofessionals about what skills they need to develop in order to be an effective leader, and what opportunities new librarians can create for themselves to eventually become leaders. The speakers can also take a “if I knew then what I know now” approach, and talk about their experiences in getting to their current position, especially if they’ve become leaders sooner than they expected, or have been quickly initiated into that role.
Our committee would like to get speakers from different kinds of libraries–public, academic and special–in order to provide as much career variety as possible, and would appreciate hearing from interested parties as soon as possible. If you are interested, please contact me via the email address or phone number below. I look forward to hearing from you!

VERSED—A NEW DIVERSITY BULLETIN
We are pleased to announce the creation of ‘Versed’: The Bulletin of the American Library Association Office for Diversity. True to its meaning: practiced, skilled, or knowledgeable; ‘Versed’ will bring together the most progressive practitioners and the best practices in current library-based diversity work. To be published 5 times per year, ‘Versed’ will be based primarily online on the Office for Diversity’s site with paper printings available twice yearly at Midwinter and Annual conferences. Please consider submitting an article or editorial; sharing a successful program or initiative; reviewing and recommending diversity-related books and videos of interest to library service (whole biblio- and video- graphies are especially welcome); tackling pressing social or professional issues; and publicizing diversity related events or conferences.
Submissions and queries should be sent to thall@ala.org or diversity@ala.org . Submit items as both plain text in the body of the email AND as a word attachment. We are currently accepting submissions for our first issue devoted to changes and emerging trends in diversity work following the recent Affirmative Action decisions. Related and general submissions welcomed. Be sure to include your full name, title, institutional affiliation, and contact information.
Please consider submitting to ‘Versed’ and be sure to share this call for submissions with colleagues. Thanks in advance for your support!
