LAMA OFFERS MIDWINTER INSTITUTES IN SAN DIEGO
In keeping with its mission of promoting opportunities for continuing education, LAMA offers three institutes preceding the San Diego Midwinter Meeting.
In “Successful Fundraising in Turbulent Times,†librarians, library advocates and association staff will learn the fundamentals of fundraising from two experts, noted author and instructor Joan Flanagan, and LAMA’s own Peter Pearson, president of the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library. The full-day workshop is sponsored by LAMA FRFDS and ALCTS and will take place on Friday, January 9.
Bill Sannwald will present his workshops, “To Build or Not to Build†and “Managing Library Building Projects,†on January 8-9. These popular workshops are a unique opportunity for librarians and others involved in building planning to aquire the knowledge and skills they need for successful projects. Participants may register for one day only; LAMA members who register for both days receive a discount.

IFLA ANNOUNCES MARKETING AWARD
The IFLA Section on Management and Marketing in collaboration with IFLA Gold Corporate Partner 3M has announced the IFLA 3M International Marketing Award for 2004. This award is given each year to reward the best library marketing project worldwide each y ear; encourage marketing inlibraries; and give libraries the opportunity to share marketing experiences.
The award will honor organizations that have implemented creative, results-oriented marketing projects or campaigns. Three finalists will be recognized for their outstanding achievements. From these three finalists, the winner will be chosen and will receive airfare, lodging and registration for the 2004 IFLA General Conference and Council in Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as a cash award of USD 1,000 which will be used to further the marketing efforts of the recognized institution or organization. The three finalists will be announced in Spring 2004. A first place winner will be chosen and two distinctions will be awarded. The winner will be announced officially at the IFLA Conference in August 2004, in Buenos Aires.

There are three levels of communication to choose from:

2. Just ALA
3. Official communications only

ALA President-elect Carol A. Brey-Casiano is seeking applications and nominations for members to serve on the 2004-2005 ALA and Council committees, with the appointments to be effective at the conclusion of the 2004 Annual Conference. Self-nominations may also be submitted. Applicants may apply electronically by completing the form at https://cs.ala.org/brey/volunteer.html . Geographical location, type of library, gender, ethnicity, previous committee work (not necessarily with ALA), ALA and related experience, and other factors are considered when the committee slates are compiled in order to ensure broad representation and diversity on all committees.
