ALA ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN TORONTO
The ALA Annual Conference in Toronto was attended by a smaller-than-usual but enthusiastic crowd of 17,500. LAMA programs were very successful, often attracting standing-room-only audiences. Those who want to see what they missed or re-experience some great programming can read articles highlighting LAMA programs in the post-conference Cognotes or in the August American Libraries magazine. Audio tapes of three LAMA programs are available for $14 each: President’s Program: Moving Up! Reaching Out!; What They Didn’t Teach You in Library School: How to be Politically Savvy; and, The Carrot or the Stick: Practical Strategies for Motivating Employees. To order, from www.ala.org, click on Events & Conferences, 2003 Annual Conference, 2003 ALA/CLA Annual Conference, and scroll down to Audio Tapes of Programs.

LEADERS OF THE PACK: LAMA BRINGS UP THE NEXT GENERATION OF LIBRARY LEADERS
At the 2003 Annual Conference, LAMA Membership Committee Member Rod MacNeil received on behalf of LAMA the ALA/World Book Award for the “Leaders of the Pack†project. The $10,000 award will support LAMA’s outreach to ten dynamic men and women who aspire to be future leaders of the library profession. In this three-year project, selected participants will develop their skills and professional networks while contributing to LAMA’s commitment to outstanding programs, life-long learning and leadership development for library administrators and managers. To qualify for consideration, candidates must not be current or past regular or student members of LAMA, and must meet the other criteria outlined on the application form. The form and complete information on the “Leaders of the Pack†project are available at www.ala.org/lama. The application deadline is September 15, 2003.

We are doing a user survey in order to make this Website useful and interesting for LA&M subscribers. Be on the lookout for the survey in September. Notification of the survey’s availability on the LAMA web site will be sent via e-mail to LAMA members. Please take the time to fill out this survey.
