LAMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MIDWINTER HIGHLIGHTS
The Board accepted the nominations for 2003 LAMA Awards as recommended by the Recognition of Achievement Committee: President’s Award—Yankee Book Peddler, Group Achievement Award—BES Functional Space Requirements Committee, Leadership Award—Roderick MacNeil and William Sannwald. It also accepted the recommendation of the Cultural Diversity Grant Committee to award two Cultural Diversity Grants in 2003, to The Academic Library Association of Ohio, and the Ocean County Library, New Jersey.
The Board approved a change in dues: a flat fee of $50.00 for personal members and $65.00 for organizational/corporate members, and a first-year membership rate of $35.00; the student membership rate of $15.00 will be unchanged. According to LAMA by-laws, the change in personal dues will be put before the membership for approval on the Spring 2003 ballot. It also approved raising the subscription price for LA&M to $65 and directed the LA&M Advisory Board to move LA&M to an enhanced web presence with the introduction of Volume 19, Fall 2004. The Board endorsed the Executive Committee’s decision, made at its Fall meeting, to contribute $1,000 to the CIPA fund. The complete list of Board key actions will appear in the Summer 2003 LA&M.

A MESSAGE FROM LAMA PRESIDENT LINDA DOBB
Dear LAMA Colleague,
At its January 28, 2003 meeting, the LAMA Board of Directors voted to place a change in our dues structure on the 2003 ballot for approval by the LAMA membership. In short, the change will involve restructuring annual dues from an amount based on an individual member’s income, to three distinct personal membership categories:
$15: student member (current rate)
$35: first year introductory rate for new member (new category)
$50: continuing member
The annual dues for organizations and corporations will increase from $45 to $65.
The rationale behind the change in personal membership dues is simple: for years, it has been up to members to change their dues category as their income increases. Many have not done so, because they just automatically renew. The vast majority of our members are already at the regular dues level ($45), but those who aren’t (including me!) just didn’t realize we had to check a new box!
For many, the new dues structure will mean an increase of $5.00 a year. This may not sound like a lot, but LAMA needs this slight increase in membership dues and, indeed, the entire regularization of its dues structure, to weather tight budgetary times, sustain its excellent programming, and perform other services needed by its members.
On behalf of the LAMA Board, I am asking that you vote YES on the new dues structure when you receive your ALA ballot this March. Your support will ensure the vitality of LAMA as an organization dedicated to serving library leaders and to creating the next generation of leaders for our nation’s libraries.
Thank you for being part of a great organization and for supporting your profession through active involvement in LAMA.
Linda S. Dobb, LAMA President

LAMA-LITA INSTITUTES IN CHICAGO
Who can tell me how to rethink my library’s physical space to accommodate new technologies? How do people budget for this? How do I deal with eBooks? Should I even bother?
LAMA and the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) are teaming up on April 25, 2003 to answer some of your most pressing technology management questions. Two day-long institutes are being offered in Chicago to help library managers and directors who are grappling with implementing eBook technology, or who are looking to redesign their libraries to accommodate new and emerging technologies.
LAMA will offer “Designing and Retrofitting Space for Technology,” which examines the issues and principles of space design for technology. The presenters for this institute are Larry Woods, Director of Information Technology and Health Sciences for the University of Iowa Libraries, and James M. Duncan, Coordinator of Information Commons and Electronic Services at the University of Iowa’s Hardin Library. They are not only experienced presenters on the topic of design and retrofitting libraries for technology, they have also both led successful redesign and retrofitting efforts at their own libraries. LITA will offer “eBooks: After Hype and Death, What Really Works?” This institute will provide a “state of the business” overview of the eBook market, with emphasis on library usability of eBooks. Various providers will be demonstrated and discussed, and examples of successful eBook programs in libraries will help you steer clear of pitfalls on the path to making eBooks available to the benefit of your patrons. Presenter Mark Beatty is the Training and Automation Librarian at Wisconsin Library Services, and speaks extensively on the topic of eBooks. He is also the training developer and trainer for the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium, a grant-based statewide eBooks consortium.
The institutes will be held concurrently, so please register for only one. Fees are $175 for LITA or LAMA members, $225 for ALA members, and $320 for non-members. The institutes will be held at the landmark Allerton Crowne Plaza hotel on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. (The Allerton Crowne Plaza has reasonably-priced rooms available for Thursday, April 24th. Please call 312.440.1500.)
Because of our upcoming move to a new content management system, we are unable to offer online registration at this time. Please contact Doll Thorn-Hawkins, 1-800-545-2433 x5032 or dthorn@ala.orgfor more information and registration assistance.
