CALL FOR LAMA MEMBERSHIP BOOTH VOLUNTEERS
ALA Annual in Atlanta is fast approaching and it is time to start planning for that all-important function – yes, staffing the LAMA Membership Booth! As you may recall, each section and committee generally provides coverage for a two-hour time slot; the assigned slots are:
BES Sunday, June 16, 1-3
Cultural Diversity Sunday, June 16, 9-11
FRFDS Saturday, June 15, 9-11
LOMS Tuesday, June 18, 10-12
HRS Monday, June 17, 12-2
PRMS Saturday, June 15, 11-1
SASS Monday, June 17, 3-5
MAES Sunday, June 16, 3-5
Two volunteers are needed for each one-hour shift, which means each chair should find 2-4 people willing to work 1-2 hours each. (Four hours total.) Since the LAMA sections and committees are only scheduling for half the times the booth is open, any additional help would be greatly appreciated. The hours for the booth are: 9-5 Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and 9-3 Tuesday. If someone on your committee would like to work the booth, but cannot do so at the times your section is scheduled please have them contact me and I will find slots for them.
Please try to get as many volunteers as possible. Participation by all LAMA members is important. As a current member, you know from personal experience about the benefits of LAMA membership. Members active in a LAMA section can speak from first-hand experience about the LAMA programs, publications and services. They are able to explain to potential members how they can contribute their services to LAMA and develop their own professional status at the same time. Also working the booth is a great experience for new LAMA members.
Please e-mail me the names and hours of your volunteers by Monday June 10. Thank you for your assistance and have a wonderful conference!
–June Koelker (J.Koelker@tcu.edu), Chair, LAMA Membership Committee

NEW AND PROSPECTIVE LAMA MEMBERS, NEW OFFICERS AND CHAIRS ORIENTATIONS
If you know someone interested in joining LAMA please encourage them to attend the New and Prospective Member Orientation on Friday June 14 from 8-9 pm at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in the International Ballroom South. The LAMA President, Membership Chair and two members will speak briefly. Then attendees will have a chance to visit with LAMA section representatives. All LAMA members are invited to attend the session to find out more about the sections and to meet new and future LAMA members.
Also at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta on June 14 from 8-9 pm in the Manila/Singapore room, the New Officers and Chairs Orientation will be held. LAMA leadership and Office staff will be presenting important information on the procedures and policies that chairs need to know to be successful. There will be time for questions. Also, the Leadership Development Committee would like to meet with those interested in staying for a few minutes at the end of the program to hear ideas on how to improve the orientation for new officers and chairs. We are beginning to explore alternative times, a longer session to allow for more interaction, future electronic tutorial, etc. We would like to hear your thoughts.
–Janice Flug, Leadership Development Committee Chair

LAMA SOCIAL
The LAMA Social will be held this year immediately following the LAMA President’s Program 2002. The Social will be at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in the Augusta Room at approximately 3:30 to 5:30 pm. The Leadership Development Committee encourages section leadership and current LAMA members to attend. It is an excellent opportunity for new LAMA members to meet LAMA leadership and members informally. Plus, there is always good food. The LAMA President’s Program 2002, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. in the same location, has the theme, “Hot Passion And Cool Leadership: Challenges For Middle Managers.” The keynote speaker is Dr. Mary Ann Glynn from the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. Preceding Professor Glynn’s presentation, there will be a brief role-play by two practicing librarians, Jerome Upchurch Conley, Head of Special Libraries of Miami University and Dallas DiLeo, Manager of Main Library Services and Head of Children’s Department at the Carnegie Public Library, on the challenges facing middle managers, particularly in trying to bring about change in their organizations.

HAROLD BILLINGS WINS ATKINSON AWARD
Harold W. Billings, Director of General Libraries at the University of Texas-Austin is the recipient of the 2002 Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award. Mr. Billings’ long career includes a history of risk-taking and visionary leadership, both in library automation, creative management, and library cooperation. Under his leadership, the UT libraries have migrated from a punched card system to a web-based, interactive catalog. His staff of over 600 has benefited from his democratic style of leadership; they enjoy opportunities to participate in cross-departmental and research work assignments that provide individuals with the opportunity to experience other perspectives within the library. Perhaps most notably, he was one of the first librarians outside of Ohio to visit OCLC in the early 1970’s; the result was his support of the extension of its resource sharing capabilities in the southwestern U.S. Within Texas, he provided leadership in the development of TexShare, which is supported by the Texas Legislature and provides consortial access to wealth of electronic reference and full-text resources for libraries of all types

ALA SEEKS NOMINEES FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT AND COUNCILOR
The ALA 2003 Nominating Committee is soliciting nominees to run on the 2003 spring ballot for the offices of ALA president-elect and Councilor at large. The Nominating Committee will select two candidates to run for President-elect and no fewer than 66 candidates for the 33 at large Council seats to be filled in the 2003 spring election. The president-elect will serve a three-year term: as president-elect in 2003-2004, as president in 2004-2005, and as immediate past president in 2005-2006. Councilors at large will serve for three-year terms, beginning after the 2003 ALA Annual Conference and ending at the adjournment of the 2006 Annual Conference.
Members who wish to make nominations should submit the following information: nominee name; present position; institution; address; telephone; fax; and e-mail address. Self-nominations are encouraged. Nominees should complete the Potential Candidate Biographical Form available at https://cs.ala.org/potentialcandidates/index.cfm. Nominations and forms are requested by June 10, 2002 but will be accepted until August 1, 2002.
Nominations may be sent to any member of the 2003 Nominating Committee (see roster at http://www.ala.org/alaorg/council/committees.html). To encourage diversity and leadership development, the Committee will refrain from nominating any current Councilors for election to another term. However, the Committee encourages all Councilors who wish to continue their service to the Association to file as petition candidates. Petitions will be available from Lois Ann Gregory-Wood, Council Secretariat, ALA, 50 E. Huron, Chicago, IL 60611, email lgregory@ala.org, or during the 2002 Annual Conference or 2003 Midwinter Meeting. Petitions require 25 signatures for names to be included on the 2003 ballot.

ALA SEEKS ENDOWMENT TRUSTEE NOMINATIONS
Nominations are now being accepted for one upcoming vacancy with the ALA Endowment Trustees. The candidate will be elected by the ALA Executive Board during the 2002 Fall Executive Board Meeting, to be held November 1-3 in Chicago, Illinois. The deadline for receiving applications is September 1, 2002.
The successful candidate will serve a three-year term that will officially begin at the conclusion of the 2003 ALA Annual Conference and expire at the conclusion of the 2006 ALA Annual Conference. However, in order to provide an orientation and assure continuity, the candidate, as Trustee Designate, will begin serving immediately upon appointment in a non-voting capacity. The Trustees are elected by the ALA Executive Board. There are three Trustees, one of whom is normally elected annually for a three-year term. Application forms are available at http://www.ala.org/alaorg/treasurer or from Elizabeth Dreazen, Director, Office of ALA Governance, at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 3203 or edreazen@ala.org. For additional information regarding the qualifications and responsibilities of the ALA Endowment Trustees, contact Keith Brown, ALA Financial Analyst, at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 4255 or kbrown@ala.org.
