ALA 2003 ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND SARS
ALA is taking the occurrence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Toronto very seriously and is evaluating reports from the city of Toronto, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on a daily basis. The health of ALA members, staff, exhibitors and the wider library community is of primary concern. The ALA Executive Board recognizes the urgency of this matter and is looking at all of our options relating to the joint conference with the Canadian Library Association. As soon as further information is available, it will be disseminated widely.
On April 23, we learned the WHO has extended its SARS-related travel advice to Toronto. As a precaution, the WHO issued temporary advice, which it will reassess in three weeks time (roughly May 14), that recommends persons planning to travel to Toronto consider postponing all but essential travel. More information can be found at: http://www.who.int/csr/don/2003_04_23/en/.
On April 22, the CDC issued a statement recommending that U.S. travelers to Toronto observe precautions to safeguard their health. These are outlined online at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/travel_advice.htm.
Health officials have urged the public to rely on official CDC and WHO information. For more information, visit: World Health Organization http://www.who.int/csr/don/en/ , Center for Disease Control http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/ . HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH FUNDING CUTS?
What’s your perspective? It’s time again to dig out the posters that say “Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries.” What are you doing to close the gap between revenue and expense for the 2003-04 budget? How have you involved trustees, staff, the community in articulating the problem? You are invited to write an essay about the what funds you’ve lost and how you’re managing for a Perspectives column in the September/October, 2003, issue of Public Libraries (the journal of the Public Library Association). Essays should be 750-1200 words and may be gently edited for clarity and space considerations. Deadline is May 1. For submission guidelines, or to send your thoughts, e-mail nbhilyard@zblibrary.org.
