KEY ACTIONS OF THE LAMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS-ALA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2002
These are the key actions of the LAMA Board of Directors taken during its two meetings during the 2002 Annual Conference:
>Evaluated the LAMA Executive Director
>Approved the proposed FY 2003 budget as submitted
>Directed the LAMA President, in the name of the LAMA Board of Directors, to send a letter to ALA Senior Associate Executive Director requesting information on the status of LA&M subscription processing, and expressing concern that new members are reporting that they are not receiving subscriptions in a reasonable time after they become members.
>Approved the concept and contend of the list of 18 programs and four preconferences for the 2003 Annual Conference in Toronto
>Approved changes in the charges of the Leadership Development Committee and Membership Committee to clarify that Membership is solely responsible for the new and prospective member orientation and the Social.
>Approved the dissolution of the PRMS Recognition Committee
>Accepted proposals for two new Regional Institutes: 1) Partnering: The Good, the Bad and the Future; Julie Todaro, presenter, and 2) Cutting Edge Redux: New and “Used” Programs and Services with a 21st Century Spin; Julie Todaro, presenter.
>Approved amending the text of the “LAMA Awards” procedures and responsibilities document (www.ala.org/lama/governance/awards.html) as follows:
Add to “Responsibilities of the Chair” section:
11. In September, contacts Section immediate past chairs, committee and task force chairs, and the LAMA Board to convey calls for nominations for awards and to stimulate nominations, at a time that coincides with the general call for nominations;
12. Prepares call for nominations to appear in all LAMA publications, such as LA&M, and LEADS.
Change item 1 in the “Responsibilities of the LAMA Executive Director” section as follows:
1. Facilitates the publicity of the annual call for nominations and prepares publicity regarding awards and their recipients.
>Approved renaming the LAMA awards as follows: Leadership Award, recognizing an individual LAMA member for outstanding leadership and contributions to the division’s goals; Group Achievement Award, recognizing outstanding team work by LAMA committees or task forces supporting the goals of LAMA; President’s Award, recognizing an individual who is not a LAMA member, or an organization, that has made significant contributions to the goals of LAMA.
>Endorsed the appointment of Marta Deyrup, assistant professor and librarian at Seton Hall University, as Associate Editor of LA&M. Ms. Deyrup brings publishing experience, an interest in LAMA and management and a desire to mentor others in publishing.
>Directed the LA&M editor to begin to develop an enhanced “web presence” for the magazine.
>Approved moving the orientation for new officers and committee members at the Annual Conference from Friday evening to 8:00 to 9:30 am on Saturday, immediately preceding the LAMA Board of Directors’ first session.
>Approved scheduling the orientation or welcome for new members to be held prior to the President’s Program, and permanently moving the Social to a 90-minute slot immediately following the President’s Program.
>Accepted, with thanks, the final report of the LAMA Website Task Force, and agreed to address the recommendations contained therein.
>Recommended that the ALA Awards Committee and the AIA Director of Honors and Awards explore the option that the joint ALA-AIA Library Building Awards be made annually rather than biennially as is currently the practice.
>Referred to the Committee on Organization the creation of a BES committee charged with the responsibility to create and maintain an electronic and freely accessible database of library building projects underway or recently completed.
>Endorsed the interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights as presented in the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee document, “Privacy: an Interpretation of the Bill of Rights.”
>Heartily applauded Joan Giesecke for her outstanding leadership of LAMA. As president, Joan graciously and deftly steered the organization through a successful transition. Her deep belief in the organization’s goals and her incredible support of the LAMA members and staff are exemplary.

The Library’s Challenge: How to Recruit and Retain High Performing Employees
August 2, 2002, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., presented by Paula M. Singer, Ph.D., President of The Singer Group, a management consulting firm she founded in 1983. This workshop is designed for library personnel with responsibility for human resources, compensation and reward systems including: Library Directors, Senior Human Resource staff, Library Managers, ranking staff association and union members, and members of Human Resources, compensation and reward system library committees.
Mission Impossible: Practical Project Management
August 3, 2002, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., presented by Pat Wagner, Co-owner of Pattern Research in Denver, CO. This workshop is ideal for teams of both decision-makers and key frontline supervisors, managers and support staff. Personnel who implement projects and/or who want to improve their project management skills will also benefit from this workshop. In the case of smaller public libraries involved in large projects, such as a new building, library trustees are encouraged to attend. In the case of school libraries, media specialists are encouraged to bring their principals.

Florida, Pink Flamingoes……and strategies for the evolution of libraries in the early 21st century. These are things you will encounter at “The E-ssential Library”, LAMA’s 2nd National Institute. Plan to attend what promises to be THE conference of 2002. The conference will be held in beautiful Naples Florida, November 14-16, 2002. Dr. Robert Martin, Director of the Institute for Museum and Library Service, will give the conference keynote. He will be joined by eight other faculty from within and outside the profession.

MARTA DEYRUP APPOINTED LA&M ASSOCIATE EDITOR
LAMA is pleased to announce the appointment of Marta Mestrovic Deyrup, assistant professor and librarian at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, as the new associate editor of Library Administration & Management (LA&M). Deyrup served on publications committees in the Association for College and Research Libraries. She is webmaster for the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, and a freelance writer and editor for Publishers Weekly, New York Times, and other periodicals. Deyrup received her masters degree in Slavic languages from Columbia University and her master of library science degree from Rutgers.
LA&M Editor Bob Moran noted that, “Marta’s editorial background and her experience interviewing, a frequent format in LA&M, will allow her immediately to contribute to and improve the magazine.” Deyrup is responsible for the news section of volumes 17 and 18 of LA&M (October 2002 through October 2004). She will then serve as editor of the magazine for volumes 19 and 20 (October 2004 through October 2006).
