KEY ACTIONS OF THE LAMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT MIDWINTER 2002
>Approved the December 2001 revision of the LAMA Bylaws. The revised bylaws will be placed on Spring 2002 ALA ballot, and, if approved, will replace existing division and section by-laws. (Go to http://www.ala.org/lama/governance/bylaws/ to view the current and proposed bylaws.)
>Approved revised nominations and elections procedures and timetable for the division, effective with the 2003 elections.
>Approved the establishment of the LOMS Organizational Development Discussion Group.
>Accepted the slate of 17 programs and 4 preconferences recommended by the LAMA Program Committee for the 2002 Annual Conference in Atlanta.
>Approved the merger of the FRFDS Clearinghouse Committee with the FRFDS Publications Committee.
>Approved establishment of a LAMA Web Site Advisory Board.
>Approved revision of the Governmental Affairs Committee charge. Also approved establishment of an official liaison between GAC and the PRMS Governmental Advocacy Skills Committee.
>Approved the name change of the Partners Committee to the LAMA Financial Advancement Committee, and a revised charge.
>Rescinded the motion passed at the 2001 ALA Annual Conference on June 19 instructing COO to add one member-at-large from each section to the Strategic Planning Implementation Committee.
>Directed COO to investigate the dissolution of the PRMS Recognition Committee.
>Accepted the FY03 draft budget as prepared.
>Authorized the Budget & Finance Committee and the Executive Committee to examine the budget to resolve the Program Committee deficit.
>Directed that, as a pilot at Midwinter 2003, the Tuesday LAMA Board meeting be moved to an earlier timeslot, and scheduled for 3.5 hours ending in the early afternoon.
>Approved the allocation of up to $100 to support the LSTA lobbying effort.
>Requested the LA&M Advisory Board to examine alternative production/distribution options with an eye toward narrowing the gap between cost and revenue.
>Approved two new Regional Institutes: “Communicating with Culturally Diverse Communities,” developed by Gail McGovern and Yolanda Cuesta; and “Emergency Preparedness: The Human Factor, Organization, and Resources in a 911 World,” developed by Julie Todaro.
>Directed that the LAMA Social be moved to Sunday afternoon, after the LAMA President’s Program, as a pilot project at Annual 2002. Charged the Leadership Development and Membership Committees to conduct an evaluation of this pilot.
>Referred to COO to determine which committee retains responsibility for the LAMA Social and to revise the committee charges accordingly.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LAMA MEMBERSHIP BOOTH AT PLA
Are you planning to attend the PLA National Conference in March? LAMA is seeking volunteers to help with the LAMA membership booth during the conference. No special knowledge is necessary. At the booth, volunteers (LAMAs) are needed to hand out materials, answer questions, and generally explain to visitors the benefits of LAMA membership. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s of great help to the Association. Booth hours are: Wednesday, March 13, 4 – 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, March 14, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Friday, March 15, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. If you would like to assist, please contact Lorraine Olley, 1-800-545-2433 x2156, lolley@ala.org by March 10. LAMA SEEKS NEW ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Assist in the production and eventually take charge of LAMA’s newly designed, enticing, practical quarterly magazine, Library Administration & Management (LA&M). The deadline for application is June 1, 2002. Finalists will be interviewed at the 2002 ALA Annual Conference in Atlanta.
The associate editor will be responsible for working closely with the editor in the production of each issue, establishing close working relationships with and serving as liaison to the LAMA section and committee chairs in reporting section news, and performing other duties as determined by the editor. The first issue for which the newly appointed associate editor will share responsibility will be volume 17, no. 1, with a copy due date in late September 2002. After serving two years, the incumbent will assume the duties of editor. The associate editor serves as an ex-officio member of the LAMA Board of Directors and the LA&M Advisory Board, and is a member of the LEADS from LAMA Editorial Advisory Board.
Applicants must be LAMA members and have a strong overall knowledge of the association and its goals, have an interest in and knowledge of management issues relevant to libraries, and a familiarity with management literature in general. Preferred applicants will have experience or familiarity with the technical and editorial issues associated with electronic and web publishing. Access to word-processing software, electronic mail, and scanning equipment is essential for the editor and associate editor. LA&M is produced exclusively from digital formats.
Applicants must make a four-year commitment to attend ALA Midwinter Meetings and Annual Conferences, with emphasis on attending LAMA meetings. Compensation up to $1,500 annually will be provided to cover documented travel and/or editorial expenses.
Candidates should send a resume and cover letter summarizing their editorial philosophy, two to four samples of written work or editorial activities, and three letters of reference addressing qualifications to: Lorraine Olley, Executive Director, LAMA, 50 E. LIBRARY BUILDING AWARD JURY: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations for jurors for the 2003 Library Buildings Award Program are being sought by the Building and Equipment Section (BES) Library Building Awards Committee. Jointly sponsored by the ALA LAMA and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the biennial awards recognize distinguished accomplishments in library architecture by American architects.
The jury consists of three librarians selected by ALA and three architects selected by AIA. The LAMA BES Library Building Award Committee will review applications, and the LAMA President will make the official appointments to the jury by May 1, 2002. Judging will take place on January 29-30, 2003, in conjunction with the ALA 2003 Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Nominees must be members of ALA and LAMA. Nominees should also be aware that projects presented in the jurying process are disqualified from consideration if any of the jurors served as a consultant or architect for the project, or is in any way affiliated with the project.

2002 JOHN COTTON DANA AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Six libraries are winners of the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award, which recognizes and honors outstanding achievement in library public relations. This award, jointly sponsored by The H. W. Wilson Company and LAMA, has been awarded continuously since 1946. The 2002 awards will be presented to: Baltimore County (Md.) Public Library; Bowling Green (Ky.) Public Library; Calgary Public Library (Alberta, Canada); Maryland State Department of Education; Division of Library Development Services; New York Public Library, and North Suburban Library System (Wheeling, Ill.). The H.W. Wilson Foundation presented each winner with a $2,500 grant.
Winning entries will be displayed at the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award booth in the exhibit area during the 2002 Annual Conference. Conference participants will also be able to view them on Sunday, June 16, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the “Best of Show/Swap and Shop.” More information on the 2002 winners and the 2003 competition is available at http://www.ala.org/lama/awards/jcd/index.html.

A Case Study/Tour of the new Student Learning Center at the University of Georgia, Athens.
