2009 AIA-ALA Library Buildings Award Program

AIA/ALA Library Buildings Awards

AIA/ALA Library Buildings Awards

Honoring the Best in Library Design

The AIA and the American Library Association/Library Administration and Management Association (ALA/LAMA) created this biennial award program to encourage excellence in the architectural design and planning of libraries and to recognize outstanding accomplishments in library architecture.

Awards may be given for new buildings, additions, renovations, restorations, conversion to library use, and interior redesign and refurbishing.

Projects must exhibit design achievement that demonstrates exemplary skill and creativity in the resolution and integration of formal, functional, and technical requirements, including ecological stewardship.

A jury comprising three architects and three librarians will judge each entry individually, not in competition with others. An Award of Excellence for Library Architecture will be presented to the architects and owners of all libraries the jury deems deserving during the ALA Annual Conference, July 9–15, 2009, in Chicago.

The program is open to all types of libraries that permit public access:

  • Academic libraries (community college, college, university)
  • School libraries (elementary, secondary)
  • Public libraries (municipal, branch, county, regional, system)
  • State and federal libraries (including presidential)
  • Institutional and private firm libraries

Eligibility

All entries shall be library projects designed by U.S.-licensed architects and submitted with the consent of both architect and owner. The libraries may be built anywhere in the world and must have been completed since December 1, 2002. They also must have been occupied and in service before entry submission.

Submission deadline: January 5, 2009
