LAMA Preconference Features Tour of Outstanding California Libraries

Participants will be able to tour two of Southern California’s most highly regarded library buildings and a major library design and manufacturing company during the American Library Association’s 2008 Annual Conference, June 27, in Anaheim, Calif. “From Castles & Coaster to Experience & Green,” a preconference program, will be presented by the Library Administration and Management Association’s (LAMA) Buildings and Equipment Section (BES).

This all-day bus tour will visit the award-winning Santa Monica and Cerritos main libraries, one noted for its “green” design and the other the first “experience” library in the nation. Participants will meet with library staff and design team members to get the facts about both buildings, before continuing to Doug C. Mockett & Company, a manufacturer of familiar products used in many libraries.

Opened in January 2006, Santa Monica’s main library received a Gold rating from the Y.S. Green Building Council. In a city known for its environmental policy, this is the second building to achieve this certification.

The City of Cerritos Library, noted for its sleek and futuristic design, presents an innovative model for library service in the 21st century—one that focuses on creating a dynamic learning experience for the user.

Early Bird Registration for “From Castles & Coaster to Experience & Green” is available through March 7 at www.ala.org/annual. Early registration is recommended due to limited space.

The mission of the Library Administration and Management Association (www.ala.org/lama) is to encourage and nurture current and future library leaders, and to develop and promote outstanding leadership and management practices. LAMA is a division of the American Library Association.
